“I—I—I have not Mme. Forester’s diamond necklace!”
Mathilde looked all around herself and tried to replace her steps but she was in such a panic she could not concentrate. She rushed down the stairs and tried to follow the cab but it was too late. The cab was long gone. mathilde just sat there on the corner at her drive way, looking down the road.
"I can't believe I did that. What ever will she say to me? She'll hate me for sure." Mathilde said to herself.
"We cannot afford to replace it, you know? Did you bring it in?.Are you sure it fall off in the bedroom or" Mathilde cut him off.
"LOOK! We won't find it if we don't look."
"Why don't you look in the antechamber?" her husband said.
Mathilde was too stubborn to ever take that advice. The antechamber was a 5' by 5' room that you entered upon entering the house. It had hooks for coats and a hat stand for whatever they decided to put on it.
"THE ANTECHAMBER? ARE YOU SERIOUS? THAT IS THE DUMBEST THING YOU HAVE SAID ALL YAER;" She screamed.
They fought for the rest of the night because Mathilde knew they couldn't replace the necklace and her husband would work for the rest of his life to pay it off. Her husband went to the living room with his pillow and declared it was too late and dark for all the screaming that was taking place. He reached behind the coat rack in the corner to turn on the light. When he hit the switch, he saw a glisten. It was brief but bright enough to blind the sun. He move the coat over and saw the necklace.
"It must have fallen off when I took her scarf." he said to himself. "Huney," he yelled with excitement,"I found it! You would never beleive were I found it."
"Where?" she declared running down the stairs with wind around her stronger than a hurricane.
"The antechamber. It must have came off when I took your scarf. Now aren't you glad I came down here. We would have never found it because it was behind that old coat holding up the rack. What a relief?"
"I'm sorry I didn't listen to you. I promise I won't ever do it again. i will be greatful for what I have. I'm so glad I don't to pay for it."
The next day, she went over to Mme's house to return the necklace. She found it to be hillarious to tell Mme the story. When she finished, Mme said "Hahahahaha! I hope you are joking because that necklace is the cheapest thing I have ever owned!" She laughed Mathilde out of her house and for that Mathilde could do nothing but feel greatful.
